About
Jorge K. Cruz (b. 1995, Guayaquil, Ecuador) is a New York City–based artist whose work explores the tension between figuration and abstraction, probing the depths of human emotion and the intricacies of psychological experience. Cruz’s paintings navigate the dialogue between past and present, blending saturated, familiar imagery with the immediacy of contemporary life. Through a sensitive handling of paint and the figure, his work manifests existential inquiries that reflect the complexity of human nature.
Cruz creates layered compositions that oscillate between figuration and abstraction, capturing moments of sublimity and introspection. His visceral, swirling use of paint reveals a commitment to uncovering universal truths, while his intuitive, experimental approach underscores painting as a site of discovery and transformation.
Cruz’s dedication to his practice has led to exhibitions in New York City and London, as well as a residency at the Tracey Emin Artist Residency in Margate, Kent, England (2023–24). His most recent exhibition, "Divine Myth - Faith and Flesh," was presented at Freight + Volume Gallery in New York City and closed in January 2025. His first solo exhibition, "Just to Keep You Satisfied," opened in March 2025 at Hurst Contemporary in London. Previous exhibitions include Figurative Impressions at Hurst Contemporary, London (2024).
