About

Jorge K. Cruz (b. 1995, Guayaquil, Ecuador) is a New York City-based artist whose work delves

into the tension between figuration and abstraction, probing the depths of human emotion and the

intricacies of psychological experience. Cruz’s paintings navigate the tension between past and

present, blending saturated, familiar imagery with the stark immediacy of contemporary

experience. His work delves into the psychological depths of human nature, manifesting

existential inquiries through a sensitive handling of paint and the figure. Cruz creates layered

compositions that oscillate between figuration and abstraction, capturing moments of sublimity

and introspection.

His swirling, visceral use of the medium reflects a commitment to uncovering universal truths,

while his intuitive, experimental approach underscores painting as a site of discovery and

transformation. Cruz’s dedication to his practice has culminated in notable achievements,

including group exhibitions in New York City and London and a residency at the Tracey

Emin Artist Residency in Margate, Kent, England (2023-24). His solo exhibition, Just

To Keep You Satisfied, is scheduled for 2025 at Hurst Contemporary in London. Cruz’s work has

been featured in group shows such as Breakthrough at James Fuentes, New York City (2023),

and Figurative Impressions at Hurst Contemporary, London (2024).
